AFSA Welcomes Bipartisan Senate Credit Repair Bill

AFSA is grateful for Sens. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Lisa Murkowski’s (R-AK) introduction of bipartisan legislation, S. 4144, the Ending Scam Credit Repair Act (ESCRA), to combat credit repair organization scams. By establishing stronger protections and accountability standards for credit repair organizations, financial institutions will no longer be inundated by duplicative and meritless credit dispute requests.

AFSA’s endorsement of ESCRA was noted by Senator Coons.

Predatory credit repair organizations (CROs) promise unsuspecting consumers with assistance on their financial or credit standing, often using such unethical practices that leave them in far worse financial straits than before. This harm to consumers has been a primary focus of AFSA, which is pleased to see continued congressional commitment to protecting Americans from scams perpetuated by CROs.

Today’s introduction builds upon the bipartisan companion legislations, HR 306, that was introduced in the House of Representatives earlier this Congress by Reps. Sarah McBride (D-DE), Young Kim (R-CA) and four additional cosponsors.

AFSA will continue to educate policymakers, the public and the media on this important consumer issue and will provide updates on this legislation as they develop.
