SGA Covers Electronic and Remote Online Notarization
AFSA’s State Government Affairs team recently released its latest White Paper. This month’s white paper is on electronic and remote online notarization. The white paper takes a deep dive on the legislative and regulatory history of electronic (e-notary) and remote online notarization (RON). More than 1.25 billion documents are notarized each year by the approximately 4.5 million notaries in the United States. E-notary and RON provides many benefits to both consumers and businesses, allowing documents to be processed much more smoothly and quickly. Currently, RON is authorized in 45 states.
The white paper takes a close look on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of 2020, only 16 states allowed RON. During the height of the pandemic, 48 states and the District of Columbia authorized RON to minimize service disruptions and serve consumers safely. The white paper also examines different e-notary and RON model bills as well as recent state legislation.
The paper is also available under the State Resources section of AFSA’s website.
