May the Fourth Be With Your Credit
It doesn’t take a light-speed leap to see that Star Wars creator George Lucas based his saga a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away on the consumer finance industry. After all, the currency he created was called credits.
Republic credits. Imperial credits. The credits Watto wouldn’t accept on Tatooine. For nearly half a century, Star Wars has reminded audiences that civilizations – even ones that might be fictional – run on credit. Ours is no different.
This May the Fourth, a few thoughts that ma resonate for those who work in consumer lending:
Han Solo has a debt problem, and it’s probably due to an Empire APR rate cap of 36%. How else to explain canonical bad loan with black market lender Jabba the Hutt? Opaque terms, an enforcement mechanism named Bobba Fett, and a borrower with no ability to refinance. It is, in its way, cinema’s strongest argument for a competitive, transparent, well-regulated consumer credit market. With the right public policies and responsible lenders meeting their customers’ needs, nobody has to do business with Jabba.
The Millennium Falcon is the most famous financed vehicle in the galaxy. “She may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts.” Which used-car shopper hasn’t heard a version of that pitch? Millions of families rely on vehicle financing to ensure they get to work, school, and the doctor’s office, albeit with transport less hyperdrive-capable than the Falcon. Vehicle finance is what turns a less than sleek vehicle on a lot into the freedom of the open road.
Yoda probably worked as an underwriter during his centuries in hiding. “Do or do not. There is no try.” Sound advice for borrowers and lenders alike: know your numbers, honor your commitments, and extend credit that meets the needs of the consumers and can responsibly be repaid.
Star Wars, at its core, is a story about freedom: to choose your path, to leave your home planet, to take a chance on a smuggler’s ship. Consumer finance, at its best, does something similar, giving American families the means to build a life on their own terms.
May the Fourth be with you.
