Gridlock Isn’t Governance: The Uncertainty of a Shutdown
As Congressional and Administration officials reach the witching hour in efforts to avoid a federal government shutdown, it’s important to highlight a couple of the underlying issues that are top of mind for American businesses and consumers.
First, is for a government that works … for its citizens and for the economy. In ways large and small, Americans depend on a functioning government. U.S. businesses and the economy do, as well, whether we’re talking about releasing economic statistics or appropriate regulatory oversight.
Second, both consumers and businesses always appreciate certainty, and ongoing delays and division over government operations breed the kind of uncertainty that hinders economic activity and a well-functioning economy. Should a government shutdown occur that limits, say, the availability of economic data or that creates regulatory uncertainty, the ripple effects could extend beyond a final agreement, particularly one that is overly complicated or short-term with no sign of long-term resolutions.
While the clock continues to tick, it behooves all parties to work together on a focused funding solution that maintains the operations of a government in a time when American communities and the economy are counting on it.
