Cannon Confirmed: Get Ready to Be Blown Away!

AFSA is proud to confirm Carl M. Cannon, the dean of Washington political journalists, as a keynote speaker at its Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.  Cannon will share his almost 40 years of political insights and experiences with AFSA attendees, as he discusses today’s political landscape and the 2022 midterm elections.

Currently Washington Bureau Chief of RealClearPolitics and the Executive Editor of RealClear Media Group, Cannon has covered every presidential campaign since 1984, and has received the two most-prestigious awards for White House coverage: the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting of the Presidency, and the Aldo Beckman Award for excellence in presidential news coverage.

A White House correspondent for National Journal and the Baltimore Sun, Cannon also covered politics, education and race relations for six newspapers across the country, from Virginia to Georgia to California. A past president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, Cannon served as a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and lectured on journalism and politics at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, George Washington University, and the Aspen Institute.

Cannon is the author of the 2017 book On This Date: From the Pilgrims to Today, Discovering America One Day at a Time. He is also the author of The Pursuit of Happiness in Times of War, which explores how American presidents and leaders have employed the language of the Declaration of Independence in times of national crisis.
