AFSA Releases 2020 Review, 2021 Preview Whitepaper

AFSA’s State Government Affairs (SGA) team published its 2021 State Legislative Preview and 2020 Review white paper this week. The paper provides members with a comprehensive preview of state legislative and regulatory activity in 2021 and identifies and reviews the trends of the previous legislative session. The year 2020 was an unprecedented one and much of the nation is still feeling the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on day-to-day operations. Many companies had to move to quickly comply with various new regulations, legislation and orders from state governments. New restrictions on consumer protections, sales, in-person operations, reporting restrictions in several industries and more have all come in the past year.

While COVID-19 business restrictions and other related issues dominated policymaking for most of the year, many states also proposed and enacted other legislation relevant to financial institutions. Although legislative data from previous sessions are not a perfect indicator of what can be expected in upcoming sessions, this information can still provide important context for future priorities. The paper is organized by issue sections for members’ convenience.

This paper, along with SGA’s other white papers, can be found on the SGA resources section of AFSA’s website.
