Joe leads RSM’s specialty finance practice for the Great Lake Region and dedicates his time exclusively to serving clients in the specialty finance industry. Our clients in the specialty finance industry include online lenders, direct consumer loans, purchasers of automobile and other retail installment contracts, purchasers of distressed debt, automobile leasing, auto dealerships and related finance companies, and small commercial loans. Joe has more than ten years of experience providing and supervising audit, consulting, and risk management services to entities ranging in size from startup companies to international organizations.
Joe has worked closely with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) on financial institution receivership engagements and FDIC loss-share agreement compliance testing, acting as a co-developer and expert of the monitoring program procedures and methodology executed nationally by RSM. Joe was also part of the leadership team responsible for performing periodic reviews of the servicer's implementation of and compliance with the national servicing standards on behalf of the Office of Mortgage Settlement Oversight (OMSO). RSM is responsible for providing support to Joseph A. Smith, Jr. (former North Carolina Commissioner of Banks), by monitoring the national mortgage settlement and overseeing the implementation of and compliance with the settlement, which involves 49 states and the United States government, in addition to the banks.
In his current role, Joe has been an instructor of the firm’s continuing professional education programs providing training to associates throughout the country. Additionally, he actively speaks to specialty finance companies at industry association and client forums across the country. Joe is a member on the committee responsible for complying and presenting the industry financial performance surveys currently being performed annually for the American Financial Services Association (AFSA). Joe has a broad base of experience in serving specialty finance companies, giving him an ability to view client businesses in a strategic framework that brings a “value added” dimension to the consultations in which he is involved. He has a comprehensive knowledge of many facets of specialty finance operations, which is unique due to his very active role in the industry. Joe is a proven business partner with the ability to establish meaningful professional relationships and has played an instrumental role for his clients in solving challenging issues under volatile market conditions.
