AFSA Urges Immediate Action from FCC

This week, the American Financial Services Association submitted a letter to the FCC requesting immediate action regarding a petition that AFSA and other trade associations submitted last month.

In the petition the trades ask for an expedited declaratory ruling, clarification, or waiver stating that phone calls and text messages placed by financial institutions using an autodialer or prerecorded voice on matters related to the COVID-19 pandemic be designated as calls made for emergency purposes and thus may be placed without the consent of the called party.

The FCC issued a public notice with a 45-day comment period, ending May 21, in response to the petition. However, financial institutions need the ability to contact their consumers now to notify them of important and often, time-sensitive information about branch hours and closings, payment deferrals, fee waivers, and other forms of relief. AFSA requests that the FCC issue a declaratory ruling on the Petition or provide other immediate relief.
