AFSA Meets with FCC on Call-blocking

This week, the American Financial Services Association (AFSA) and other industry trade associations met with staff from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to discuss the ongoing issue of illegal robocalls. AFSA supports the FCC’s efforts to stop illegal robocalls as outlined in AFSA’s recent comment letter to the FCC.

While the associations and the FCC agree on the necessity to reduce illegal automated calls, the associations are concerned about recent reports of erroneous blocking of legal calls that include important and time-sensitive communications. To address this issue, the associations are requesting that the FCC require phone carriers take additional steps to prevent the mislabeling of lawful calls. These steps include requiring carriers to give notice to businesses when a derogatory label is placed on an outbound call, offering a timely redress mechanism if a legal call has been erroneously blocked, and sharing information between carriers regarding phone numbers that have been mislabeled or erroneously blocked and providing such information to the FCC.
