AFSA Education Foundation Collaboration

The AFSA Education Foundation recently joined representatives from the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) and the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 54th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC). The event brought close to 16,000 attendees from across the U.S. and internationally.

Myra Dandridge, Executive Director of External Affairs and Public Policy for NADA, moderated a panel session, Car Buying, Credit, and What You Need to Know, with panelists Rhonda Ashburn, Executive Director, AFSA Education Foundation, Marc Bland, Vice President, New Business Development and Growth Audiences, S&P Global, James H. Colon, Owner and Dealer Principal, Marysville Toyota, and Perry Watson, IV, President, National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers.

The panel session was designed for consumers who are first-time car buyers, returning buyers, young adults and college students, or with low-to-moderate income. Panelists offered helpful assistance for those thinking about buying or leasing a car.

The session also highlighted various consumer resources, including the AFSA Education Foundation’s MoneySKILL® personal finance curriculum, with 3 of its 37 modules related to preparing to acquire a vehicle, operating a vehicle, and vehicle financing. In addition, AWARE (Americans Well-informed on Automobile Retailing Economics), a collaboration between AFSA and NADA to provide consumers with resources for purchasing and financing a vehicle was noted. Also highlighted:  the “Understanding Vehicle Financing” brochure created with the Federal Trade Commission, NADA, and the AFSA Education Foundation, and a new brochure, “Know Before You Buy,” created by NADA and supported by NAMAD, AIADA (American International Automobile Dealers Association), the National Urban League, and the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Audience members were engaged and will be able to apply their learnings the next time they step into a dealership and finance a vehicle!
