October White Paper | “States in the Name of the CFPB”
AFSA’s State Government Affairs team published its latest white paper, examining the changing enforcement landscape following leadership changes at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
With former CFPB Director Rohit Chopra’s departure, the bureau has taken a markedly different approach under the Trump administration, stepping back from aggressive consumer protection enforcement. This shift has left a gap that a number of states are now working to fill—many with encouragement or guidance from Chopra himself. Several state bills remain active heading into 2026, signaling that more legislatures may soon pursue tougher enforcement measures.
This paper, along with SGA’s other white papers, can be found on the SGA resources section of AFSA’s website.
