FTC Welcomes New Appointees
AFSA would like to congratulate the new FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson. As of January 20th, FTC Commissioner Andrew Ferguson is Chair of the Federal Trade Commission, taking over for former Chair Lina Khan. As Chair Ferguson was already a confirmed commissioner of the FTC; he assumed his role immediately following President Trump’s oath of office.
Before being nominated for his commission seat, Ferguson served as Virginia Solicitor General from 2022 to 2024. Before that, he served as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s chief counsel. He also was Chief Counsel for Nominations and the Constitution for then-Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-SC). He also served as Senior Special Counsel to then-Judiciary Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley, (R-IA).
AFSA would also like to congratulate FTC nominee Mark Meador, who President Trump nominated to serve as an FTC Commissioner. That nomination will need to be voted on by the Senate. Meador is a former staff member for Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT). He has experience serving at the FTC, having spent five years at the beginning of his career working on antitrust cases at the agency. In a memo to staff, Commissioner Khan announced that she would retire from the FTC in the coming weeks, opening the spot for Meador. AFSA looks forward to working with Chair Ferguson and nominee Meador on the variety of issues that affect access to credit for all Americans.
