Remembering Al Wiese

AFSA is saddened to learn of the death of long-time law Committee Vice Chairman Alvin O. Wiese on October 11 at the age of 95.

A graduate of the University of Southern California Law School, Al was admitted to the bar in 1954 and dedicated his life to representing consumer finance lenders, AFSA, and the California Association.

Al was an effective and perceptive witness before congressional hearings, particularly on bankruptcy reform. He drafted numerous federal and state amendments for AFSA and was often the final editor of AFSA’s testimony.

He received the AFSA Distinguished Service Award for his work on the FTC Credit Practices Rule, TILA and bankruptcy reform.

A longtime resident of Indian Wells, California, Al was a scratch golfer, a skier (snow and water), dog lover, and world traveler. AFSA Law Committee members learned of his opposition to highball glasses when he always ordered cocktails in “a bucket”—often to the puzzlement of bartenders and servers.

He is survived by his wife, Patti, a popular figure in her own right at AFSA meetings, and their daughter Cathy.
